This is my first Amsterdam Klezmer Band or Söndörgö album so I this short review is (of course) nothing more than my personal impression to share my enthusiasm for this album.

To me this album is an instant classic. This album feels verry wel crafted to me, not in a small part due to the fantastic production. Each instrument has the space to be heard clearly while the deep and warm sounding walking bass ties the music together. The whole album reminds me more that a bit of Fanfare Ciocarlia, around the time of Iag Bari, that is to say that Söndörgö and A.K.B.'s sound is energetic like listening to a live performance, not to polished or over produced, but it's 'natural' feel never sounds rushed or bad, instead it invites the listener to listen more closely to the craftsmanship of the players.

Söndörgö (Hungray) undoubtedly bring the Ottoman sounding influences to the music, but there is more that a bit of (Big Band) jazz influence to be heard on this album. While A.K.B. and Söndörgö mix all kinds of influences on this album, they have managed to still sound thoroughly traditional. (Another reason I was reminded of Fanfare Ciocarlia.) Klezmer is wedding and funeral music, to be experienced live, it seems a challenge to translate this to a record to be played on a home sound system, but Söndörgö and the Amsterdam Klezmer Band have done an outstanding job in my opinion. Recommended listening for anyone who has even a slight interest South East-European, Balkan and Klezmer music!
