Album

Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band is the name taken by Conor Oberst and his backing band, which is composed of Nik Freitas guitar, Taylor Hollingsworth guitar, Macey Taylor bass, Nate Walcott keyboardsorgan and Jason Boesel drums. The band was formed to back Oberst on his 2008 solo album but soon evolved into a band of its own with all members singing and providing songs for 2009's Outer South. Conor Oberst's Mystic Valley Band initially seemed a bit like a busman's holiday, a way for him to throw off whatever expectations he had as Bright Eyes, a way to get a bit loose and rowdy. This behavior is atypical for singersongwriters, but it fits the spirit of Outer South, an album written, recorded and about the road - a roadworn cliché that always gets reinvigorated whenever its executed with gusto, as it is here, partially due to Oberst spreading the wealth. Having three other singers here makes Outer South a bit messy, but it speaks to what makes the album work: it's about playing, not the song. Purchasable with gift card. NovemberDecember 2008 Produced by Conor Oberst and the Mystic. Oberst made the album with a newly assembled cadre of players dubbed the Mystic Valley Band, yet it was still solely his name and mug on the cover and almost exclusively his voice and songs on the CD. A full subsuming of Oberst's personality would severely dilute his music's power, but Outer South seems to actually undo many of the beneficially humbling gains made by his last record. Unquestionably, there are dazzlers here, foremost the ripping power-popper Cabbage Town and the equally pleasing, jangly Spoiled, which cannily evokes the ramshackle charm of 1980s . and the Cure. The name taken by Conor Oberst and his backing band, which is composed of Nik Freitas, Taylor Hollingsworth, Macey Taylor, Nate Walcott and Jason Boesel. There is a reason that Oberst's single album with the Mystic Valley Band is largely forgotten today it's essentially because it is forgettable. After getting through this hour-plus record, only a small handful of the 16 tracks really did anything to stand out. White Shoes is really the only track feeling deserving of an Oberst bump and fitting of the singers talent, with a somber and focused sound throughout. Otherwise, songs like Snake Hill and Cabbage Town stood out but were more due to. read more. 9mo. Record Label: Merge. Genres: Indie, Rock. Outer South is a decently stocked serving of rambling, saloon-joint alt-country, but one that finds the freewheeling Oberst and band in need of a little focus. Read full review. It mostly works: Shave a couple of the non-Conor tracks and it'd sit comfortably with his best. This makes sense. sort of. After all, back in 2003 those convenient, The Next Bob Dylan labels were being issued out by feverish journalists like hotcakes
