Формируйте собственную коллекцию записей Brain is the third studio album by the American funk band Funkadelic, released by Westbound Records in July 1971. It was produced by band leader George Clinton and recorded at United Sound Systems in Detroit during late 1970 and early 1971. It was the final album recorded by the original Funkadelic lineup after its release, original members Tawl Ross, Billy Nelson, and Tiki Fulwood left the band for various reasons. though the Mothership was well on its way already, Maggot Brain really helped it take off. The instrumental title track is the key reason to listen, specifically for Eddie Hazel's lengthy, mind-melting solo. George Clinton famously told Hazel to play like your momma had just died, and the resulting evocation of melancholy and sorrow doesn't merely rival Jimi Hendrix's work, but arguably bests a lot of it. Genre: Funk Rock. Maggot Brain was an explosive record, bursting at the seams with exactly the kind of larger than life sound a band called Funkadelic should have made. Full Review. Best of 1971. OK, what's a funk album doing being reviewed in Audion? Well, actually I wouldn't have given Funkadelic any attention at all if it weren't for Steven (Nurse With Wound) Stapleton's intimation that some of this quaintly titled album was like Brainticket on COTTONWOODHILL! Actually, reading up on Funkadelic history it seems they were a very innovative band, the experimental outfit of one illustrious George Clinton. In fact it is rumoured that all early Funkadelic albums have their excellent moments. Even more curious MAGGOT BRAIN was also released in Germany on Bellaphon only a few catalogue numbers later than Brainticket's debut!Anyway, one thing I must draw your attention to is that, although there's a lot of incredible music here, it's a very patchy album - thus it is advisable to invest in the CD version and program your player's memory for tracks 1, 3, 5 and 7. Now sit back and relax to the 10 minute spaced-out opener: Maggot Brain itself with its Pink Floyd cum Ash Ra Tempel styled guitar - really psychedelic. Hit It And Quit It is a lot like early Karthago, or Edgar Broughton. Super Stupid is in great heavy Hendrix style. Actually, it's not until the final track Wars Of Armageddon where we move into Brainticket territory, this near 10 minute power-drive really rattles along: chunky organ riffing with heavy percussives, choppy wah-wah guitar, lots of off-the-wall effects and voices - an amazing piece of music actually, although not as intensive or revolutionary as Brainticket's opus. All in all, 27'51" of great music, which isn't bad going! From my review in Audion #21, published in May 1992
"OK, what's a funk album doing being reviewed in Audion?", "it seems they were a very innovative band", "it is rumoured that all early Funkadelic albums have their excellent moments".... The ignorance is oozing from this dolt's pores.
Ignore the 'review' by the dope from Audion. It's all great of course! He admits he only reviews it because it sounds like a bunch of white grebo hippies. Funkadelic is not normally his kind of thing. How narrow minded and square do you have to be to not love Funkadelic? Yeah you know!
