Group Bombino's Guitars from Agadez, vol. 2 is not going to top any year-end lists or change the way people think about music unless some ridiculous character uses Tuareg traditions to make annoying pop songs, but it's a wonderful album in its simplicity and exoticism-defying charm. It's an album that should be taken as matter of factly as possible and enjoyed with no reservations and hopefully less intellectually than I've treated it here. Perhaps the main difference between Group Bombino's acoustic set and that of the Malian greats is the accompanying clapping - taking a note from the North African sound and perhaps the Gnawa sect more specifically, the group claps sharply and relentlessly, mimicking the qaraqebs essential to some of the North African styles. When the band turns electric in the second half of the album, the difference is surprising. Not just an amplification of the desert sound they had been fostering, the electric Tuareg sound is psychedelic, dense. The rhythms are similar, the melodies are similar, bu. This album by Group Bombino, the desert rock group led by Omara Mochtar aka Bombino, is the second guitars from Agadez release after the 2007 album by Group Inerane. Hisham Mayet of Sublime Frequencies came to know of the group that same year while on a return trip to Agadez, the city and region in Niger that is home to what Mayet calls the Tuareg guitar scene. In his liner notes, Mayet describes attending a concert featuring a number of Agadez groups and being blown away by Bombino's electric force. Appropriately for a project originally disseminated on LP, Guitars from Agadez Vol. 2 is divided into two halves. The first four tracks represent the dry guitar sound that was Bombino's first influence these tracks come from Group Bombino's own archives. Group Bombino Format: Audio CD. The last five songs were recorded live by the founder of the Sublime Frequencies label in Agadez, Niger and Group Bombino live is a different beast altogether. Bombino's band features other guitarists and a kit drummer. The mix is far from great as the vocals are all but lost in the mix. Add album to Cart. Listen online top songs Group Bombino.
