Album

Vibrant Stapler Obscures Characteristic Growth. Your Rating. Overview . Hastings of Malawi were Heman Pathak, David Hodes and John Grieve. They recorded the album in one night in 1981 with no plan and no idea of what they were doing. They played drums, clarinet, synthesiser and piano but also made use of things that they found lying around the studio - old records, cookery books, telephone directories and a telephone. The album was released in 1981 as Vibrant Stapler Obscures Characteristic Growth by Hastings of Malawi on the Papal Products label. The star of the record is Pat Simmons who was the voice of the UK speaking clock between 1963 and 1984. Album 1981 2 Songs. View wiki. Hastings Of Malawi were a British Industrial Music group. If this line exists, then Vibrant Stapler Obscures Characteristic Growth sits on the end of it. The only review that the album received was from Steve Stapleton who suggested that nobody should miss this vinyl disaster - good or bad are not concepts that can be applied to this recording. The record stands firmly in opposition to the now all pervading concepts of commercialization, celebrity culture and the commodification of creative activity. Weekly Roundup. Album of the Week. Warp Home Listening Music future-proofed by way of its outlandish, disclocated temporality and punkish disregard for convention, Vibrant Stapler Obscures Characteristic Growth was Hastings of Malawis one and only release, and original copies are purportedly rarer than they should be because one of the band members parents binned 300 of them. I'm surprised that there would only be 100-120. I owned two copies at one point that I came across randomly at different times in the 90s. The chances of that with such a small pressing must be pretty low.

Hi I am a new member and I can see your conversation. I have a red copy of the 1981 vinyl . I worked with David hodes and he gave me the copy . he told me him and a couple of friends just went in the studio and made it one night. I have kept it ever since we were about 18 at the time

I find this to be so similar to "Gyllensköld, Geijerstam And I At Rydberg's". I'm sure Steven saved one of those copies for himself.

Stapleton was not involved with this LP. The only UNdirect relation might be that Heman Patack was one of the three members of the early NWW, "Chance meeting..." LP was recorded with him! Patack left NWW after the 1st LP and directly did with John Grieve and Dave Hodes, Hastings Of Malawi, a new DaDa / Concrete music. Their only LP, "Vibrant Stapler Obscures Characteristic Growth" both released on black and clear-red vinyl was limited at 500 copies. It is an extremly rare LP 'cause 300 copies were destroyed!

I do remember him selling copies via united dairies mailorder. "No one should miss this vinyl disaster" was the marketing tag line :)

I can confirm that Steven Stapleton was not at all involved in this LP. I'm a Lucky guy 'cause i got the red version copy of the ultra rare Hasting Of Malawi . And i'm in Kontact with John Grieve (Hasting Of Malawi) since years... Who knows where is Heman Patack today? I tried to make some investigations... but no result !

Apparently a fairly large number of copies were destroyed by the parents of one of the participants.....but this may be hearsay ! Either way, it is an extremely rare record !
