Embryonic is the twelfth studio album by experimental rock band the Flaming Lips released on October 13, 2009 on Warner Bros. News of the album first surfaced in an interview with Wayne Coyne, who stated that Somewhere along the way it occurred to me that we should do a double album. Just this idea that you can weave a couple of themes into there and you can sprawl a little bit. Horns up a Sabbathian dirge swirling with Southern Gothic vibes and lifted above the fog by Crystal's soaring vocals - REVOLVER Magazine As 1823 ends its run, it characterizes EMBR somewhere between doom and ambient sludge or post-metal, but one of the most encouraging aspects of the album is that its less about conforming to style than it is about offering. Christmas on Mars might be the Flaming Lips' bona fide sci-fi epic, but Embryonic is the musical equivalent of the final scenes of 2001: A Space Odyssey: transformative chaos that results in a new start. There's a raw directness to Embryonic that's been largely absent from Lips records since the mid-90s. For the first time in years, they've made an album that actually sounds like a band playing live together in a small room. This album sounds delicious on vinyl. The dark nature of the album really reveals itself beautifully. Definitely worth revisiting if it didn't pull you in immediately after it was released. The more detail you can hear in the sound, the worse the listening experience is. Play it through something basic, but loud. I think it sounds much better this way. And when you get to the final track, 'Watching the Planets'. Turn it up all the way
