Led Zeppelin is the debut album by English rock band Led Zeppelin. It was released on 12 January 1969 in the United States and on 31 March in the United Kingdom by Atlantic Records. The album was recorded in September and October 1968 at Olympic Studios in London, shortly after the band's formation. Although the album was not critically well-received when first released, critics have since come to view it in a more favourable light. Following the release of their second album, Led Zeppelin completed several more US tours. They played initially in clubs and ballrooms, and then in larger auditoriums as their popularity grew. Some early Led Zeppelin concerts lasted more than four hours, with expanded and improvised live versions of their repertoire. Many of these shows have been preserved as bootleg recordings. It was during this period of intensive concert touring that the band developed a reputation for off-stage excess. In 1970, Page and Plant retired to Bron-Yr-Aur. The group's debut album hit shelves that same month and they were in the midst of their inaugural American tour, opening up for Country Joe and the Fish during a four night stand at the Fillmore West. For the recordings, Page played a psychedelically painted Fender Telecaster, a gift from Jeff Beck after Page recommended his boyhood friend to the Yardbirds in 1965 as a potential replacement for Eric Clapton on lead guitar. This was a different guitar from those he favoured for later albums most notably a Gibson Les Paul. In 2003, VH1 named Led Zeppelin the 44th greatest album of all time, while Rolling Stone ranked it 29th on the magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Much of that album, 1969s Led Zeppelin, features the leanest iteration of what became the bands formula: American blues and British folk played with dizzying guitar solos and cyclones of drum chaos. Good Times Bad Times is propelled by Bonhams rubbery right foot, and the down-stroked railroad chug of Communication Breakdown was powerful enough to influence Johnny Ramone. There are even some early tastes of their more experimental inclinations-like the avant-garde bowed-guitar bad trip of Dazed and Confused and the pastoral British-folk-meets-Indian-tabla of Black Mountain Side.
