Gave it a deep listen in the record store when published in 1998. At that time, I was very much into this stuff. This album features a simple, light version of the top half of Trip Hop duos featuring a female vocal part. Yet, it lacked a certain odd rhythm structure or dark layer that many of the well remembered projects had and thus was left at the store. In 2018, I felt happy to find stuff from the warmly remembered era in a 2nd hand store and picked the album up on occasion. Well, after two rounds, Empathy is just cheesy pop. Too much mediocre teenage heartbreak love sond lyrics, too many 'that sounds cool' samples that haunt the listener repeatedly throughout the songs. I would be interested in the voice working with some less boring lyrics and a more complex production structure.

No one needed to pretend this was a Portishead album to make it worth listening to. It is an absolutely gorgeous album with etherial, atmospheric tones and chilled beats. Madonna said it was her favourite album of 1998, which is surprising as it is a million miles from anything she has ever recorded. Guy Sigsworths production shines through with layer upon layer of sound topped by Steve Jansen's wonderful percussion. One track, All My Sins, includes samples from Talk Talk's 'I Don't Believe in You'.

This album was at the centre of a controversy involving Portishead. Someone expertly repackaged it and titled it "Pearl", claiming it was a new album from Portishead. Fans of Portishead often discussed the "obscure new Portishead album". While the album doesn't sound that much like Portishead, when I bought it I fell for the hoax, thinking Portishead had stripped down their sound and lightened up! Anyway, it's a good album, but definitly NOT Portishead. Beware!
