The album was recorded in December 1988 at Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida. The album is one of the earliest examples of death metal and is considered to have helped pioneer the sound along with Possessed's Seven Churches in 1985 and Death's Scream Bloody Gore in 1987, and set a new precedent for heaviness and extremity, both. The remastered version released in 2003 includes several remixed versions of songs from the album. 2006 saw a dual-disc release with the 2003 remaster on the audio side and 'Live Madness 89' recorded at Nottingham Rock City on the 14th of November 1989 on the DVD side. In the album's liner notes, the band dedicates the album to the underground and to speed, death, and black metal fans everywhere. The cover artwork represents the different moods of humans. Morbid Angel is probably one of the biggest and most famous bands in the Death metal genre, their album sales are what you can call a small commercial success. Appreciated by a lot of extreme metal fans, you can probably find at least one of their records in every Death metal fan's collection and with what they've made in their career, they certainly deserve it. This is their debut full length. An enjoyable listen, but, with ups and downs. But it was surely a key album in the history of Death Metal after it's release in '89.
