Mikael Åkerfeldt dedicated both albums to his grandmother, who died in a car accident during the time the albums were being recorded. Damnation - Opeth. It was released on April 22 of that year, just five months after releasing their previous album Deliverance, one of their heavier albums. Unlike most albums up to this point, Damnation has no trace of their death metal sound at all, leaving in its place a slower, lighter, more mellow sound filled with clean guitars, vocals, mellotron, and an overall strong influence from 70s progressive rock. Despite this change, it managed to be critically acclaimed and increased the bands popularity enough to get them to release their. Opeth - Damnation 2003. To favorites 24 Download album. Needless to say, the 43 minute progressive rock offering is among the greatest albums released over the last few years. Review Summary: Opeth softens up their sound, completely eliminating the extreme metal influences from their song writing. As I sit in my bedroom, writing the opening sentences of this review, I take a look out the window.
