Mark of the Mole is an album by The Residents, released in 1981 on Ralph Records. The first in what was intended to be a trilogy of six albums with a narrative centred on a conflict between two rival peoples, the Moles and the Chubs. Mark of the Mole introduces the Moles a subterranean society whose gods offer salvation through hard labor who are forced to abandon their tunnels due to flooding at the start of the album. The Moles enter the land of the Chubs. Mark of the Mole is the eighth album by The Residents, released on September 15th 1981 on Ralph Records as the first volume of the group's ambitious and ultimately unfinished six-part Mole Trilogy. Mark of the Mole details a conflict between two differing cultures: the Mohelmot, or Moles, a subterranean society whose gods offer salvation through hard labor and the Chubs, a leisurely and vapid species who live in luxurious homes by the sea. It was also the beginning of the band's desire often detrimental to broaden their scope, to construct long concept albums, or imagine series of albums that would never be completed. Mark of the Mole imagines a race of mole workers who live underground and worship darkness and work they're the heroes. When a flood forces them to flee their home, they migrate across the desert to the land of the Chubs, who subjugate them and cause war to break out. In the third Mole Trilogy album The Big Bubble , The Residents humorously suggest that the aforementioned album is actually the fourth album in the saga, but the purported third album was never released. The saga depicts an ongoing cultural conflict between two races: the Moles and the Chubs. The conflict eventually becomes violent as the territory of the Chubs becomes overwhelmed by the Mole population, who migrated in droves to the land of the Chubs after a natural disaster flooded the Moles' underground homeland.
